My First Ever Whole Class Teaching Experience

Overall, Fieldwork this semester at Bishop Dunn was a great experience that really showed you if you wanted to be a teacher or not. Personally, I loved the experience. At first, I was so nervous. We were in front of 23 4th graders AND our classmates! Not to mention this was my very first time teaching in front of a whole entire class. I am very happy how fieldwork was split into 2 days, and I am also very happy with the group I worked with. We were a great team! The first day of our lesson, direct instruction, didn't go how I wanted it to. Students were very confused about the note sheet and since we kept stopping, we ran out of time. I was so excited to play the jeopardy game with the kids and we didn't get through a lot of it. the second day was definitely better. the kids had to guess the planet that was in front of them that y group and I constructed. they had to use their knowledge and the clues given to make a decision. This worked very well with the class and they were so engaged. I appreciated the feedback that we received from our colleagues. We got a lot of the same feedback, stay telling us that we should have enforced the behavior management a little better. As much as I wanted our lesson to be perfect, it was my first time and I need to hear what we did wrong. It is only to help us in the end, and I am so thankful to have that. Now I know what to do next semester in Social Studies Methods when it is time to teach again. I plan to improve my instruction in future classes and in my future career, with the feedback I received.

I recently went to a poverty simulation for Professional Development, even if this wasn't for Professional Development, I most likely would have went anyway. This really changed my outlook on life, and its great to know as a future teacher to understand how less fortunate children and families feel. The point of this was exactly that. We were assigned a person of a community to be apart of a family. All of the families struggled, and we had to learn and figure out as a family how to live our lives with barely anything. My character was a 16 year old pregnant girl. My parents were always out of the house, so I had to watch my brothers. My boyfriend wasn't around much, because he was doing whatever he needed to for his family. I still had to attend school as a pregnant teen. Project WET and Project Aquatic Wild

On Saturday, September 30th, I attended a workshop called Project WET and Project Aquatic Wild. I really enjoyed it! Randy, the facilitator from The Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany gave us so many great resources to use in our future classrooms. We started out with an icebreaker activity. I really liked the activity, because it made us think, but we also met people as we did it. Randy gave us cards with a species on it, and we had to find either the adult or baby version of that species. For example, I had a butterfly. My job was to find the caterpillar, because that is the baby version of the butterfly. this was a great way to pre-assess, and also as a great icebreaker. Another activity that we did was designing our own fish by rolling the dice! This activity was so fun. we rolled the dice to find out what mouth to put, the coloration, the tail shape, body shape, and the type of reproduction for our fish. this was fun to see all the different kids of fish we all cre...

The Outer Planets, Day Two

Group 3 started their lesson by reviewing what they learned last time. They did this through word art. I really liked that they did that! They then showed the students a song and dance about the outer planets! this was so cute and the kids kept asking to do it again! Nicole then reviewed the scientific method with the students, and then handed out an investigation notebook. each group had to make an observation based on the picture that was tweeted by astronaut Annie. I really liked how they incorporated social media. Each teacher was at a group to keep them on track. students were directed to make a hypothesis when a students presented about their planet, the other students recorded what they were saying in their investigation notebook. the original groups met up front to present their findings and their hypothesis. the teachers then revealed their planets to see if they were right.
